Introducing Playwriting In The Classroom

This workshop help teachers facilitate playwriting instruction in their classrooms and encourage the creation of a safe and supportive environment in which students can share their work and provide feedback to one another. Teachers will learn how to introduce basic essentials such as writing subtext and action, and will learn a non-evaluative feedback model which encourages the young dramatist and creates a a sense of creative empowerment as well as a positive group dynamic and sense of ensemble.

    Shawn Macdonald

    Shawn is an award-winning actor and playwright who has lived and worked in Vancouver since 1988. He is the co-author of three hit comedies (with Gary Jones): The Vacant Bachelor, World’s Greatest Guy (Jessie Award for Outstanding original Script) and Fear Knot (five time Jessie nominee including Outstanding Original Script). His play Prodigal Son (Touchstone/Pacific Theatre) won the Jessie for Outstanding Original Script in 2006. His play Demon Voice was produced by Touchstone Theatre in 2009, and his play Sister Judy was commissioned by The Arts Club Theatre (Silver Commissions) and received its world premiere in 2015. Most recently, Shawn wrote the book and lyrics for the original musical Sea Of Stories, a commission from Peninsula Productions about the history of White Rock, BC as part of the Canada 150 celebrations.


    Shawn is also a celebrated actor with over 100 credits to his name in both theatre and film and television. His career spans improv comedy, Shakespeare, as well as contemporary interdisciplinary work. He has been honoured with 5 Jessie Awards and 1 Leo Award.


    He has been the Instructor and Program Leader for the LEAP Playwriting Intensive for Young Writers at the Arts Club Theatre since 2007, and was the Artistic Associate at Green Thumb Theatre for 7 years where he facilitated the creation of original devised works by and for teenagers.
